Beautiful set of six colorful hand-painted ceramic plates from Puebla, Mexico, each decorated with its own cheerful floral folk-art design. 🌼
The plates feature wonderfully rustic handmade character, with flowers, leaves, dots and geometric borders painted in combinations of deep blue, green, yellow, orange, red, lavender and white. Although the six coordinate beautifully as a set, no two designs are exactly alike.
The handwritten markings on the backs connect the pieces with the Loza Poblana pottery tradition of Puebla, Mexico. Several are marked “Loza Poblana,” “Región de Origen” and “Pue. Mex.,” while two refer to San Sebastián de Aparicio, a community within the municipality of Puebla. One additional mark appears to include the Hernández name, although I have not been able to conclusively identify the individual workshop or painter.
📜 history
Puebla has been an important center of Mexican ceramic production since the 16th century. Its pottery tradition developed through the meeting of European glazed-ceramic techniques with the extensive pottery knowledge already practiced by Indigenous artisans in the region. These plates appear to belong to the more modern colorful Loza Poblana tradition rather than being pieces I can confirm as certified Denomination-of-Origin Talavera.
They would make a wonderful group of small display plates, colorful Mexican folk-art decor, or an eye-catching plate wall arrangement.
Note that each one has holes in the back for inserting a cord or wire to hang on a wall.
They are approximately dessert-plate size.

Each plate varies slightly because of its handmade construction, but they are approximately the same size:

✔️ condition
Excellent condition overall. There are no cracks and no visible crazing. As expected with handmade pottery, there are irregularities and marks from the manufacturing process. Two plates have very small chips/nicks on the underside/bottom area. Please check the photos carefully for these details and for the individual handmade variations.
