Say hello to a bold slice of West‑African artistry!
❤️ Hand‑carved from solid sese wood, this elongated Ghanaian wall plaque features almond‑shaped eyes, a long “pipe” nose and fiery red, black and gold motifs.
The surface is chiselled in shallow relief, then painted with earth pigments and metallic gilt to catch the light from every angle. A sturdy screw eye at the crown lets you hang it straight out of the box.

📜 Cultural Background
Mask‑making in Ghana goes back centuries among Akan, Ewe and Dagbani peoples, where carved faces invoke ancestral spirits during festivals, funerals and judicial “purification” rites. Performers wear or display elongated masks while drumming and dancing, believing the sweeping nose ‑ a path between worlds – guides blessings to the village. Use of bright red (life‑force), black (ancestral power) and gold (prosperity) remains common.
Symbol highlights
▪️ Almond eyes – vigilance, ancestral watchfulness
▪️ Central spine/nose – conduit between spirit and earth
▪️ Scalloped gold crowns – royalty & protection
▪️ Radiating border lines – community unity / “circle of life”
✔️ This wall hanging face is in good vintage condition: paint shows scattered scuffs, corners chips and twist typical of old wood (see photos). Hook hole has a small stress crack but remains firm. All add character without compromising display.
