đ¤ Bring home a slice of the golden age of TV cowboys with this delightful midâcentury Roy Rogers ranch lantern toy.
Manufactured by the Ohio Art Co. in the 1950s, this tin litho lantern is painted in patriotic red and blue and decorated with longhorn cattle, horseshoeâshaped side brackets and Roy Rogersâ signature script.
Originally battery powered, it features a hinged handle for carrying or hanging and a clear plastic globe over the light housing.
The bulb and battery compartment are missing, so itâs now a wonderful display piece rather than a working lamp.
The main handle folds down and there is a smaller loop on top â perfect for hanging on a hook or adding to a collection shelf.
đ Roy Rogers history â Born Leonard Franklin Slye in Cincinnati in 1911, Roy Rogers earned the nickname âKing of the Cowboysâ. After coâfounding the Sons of the Pioneers singing group, he became one of the most popular Western stars of his era, appearing in almost 90 films and hosting his own radio show and the television âRoy Rogers Showâ from 1951 to 1957. Fans loved seeing him with his wife Dale Evans, his palomino Trigger and his dog Bullet. Heâs the only country singer inducted twice into the Country Music Hall of Fame, and he has four stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. His popularity led to a huge range of licensed merchandise â from lunchboxes and cap guns to this playful lantern â and he even lent his name to a chain of restaurants.
â¤ď¸ Made by Ohio Art Co. â The company began life in 1908 when Henry Winzeler set up a small shop in Archbold, Ohio, to make metal picture frames and novelty items. The business moved to Bryan, Ohio in 1912 and installed metalâlithography presses, enabling it to produce woodâgrained metal frames. By 1917 the company had expanded into toys, producing windmills and climbing monkeys. After World War I it launched colorful tea sets and drums, and it later became famous for the Etch A Sketch drawing toy. During the 1950s Western craze the company produced licensed Roy Rogers items like this lantern, which have become nostalgic collectibles.
âď¸ This lantern is in good vintage condition with rich color and charming patina. The tin shows wear, scratches and some light oxidation from decades of play and display. The plastic globe has no cracks or breaks, but there're scratches and there is dust inside because the lantern cannot be opened. The bulb and bottom battery cover are missing. A thorough cleaning was performed, though some marks remain â they add character to this 70âplusâyearâold toy.
â ď¸ Because of its age and missing electrical parts, it is sold strictly as a decorative piece and is not safe for children to play with.
đ Measurements â With the handle extended the lantern stands about 11½ inches (â29.2 cm) tall; with the handle folded and hanging loop up it stands about 8½ inches (â21.6 cm). It measures approximately 4½ inches (â11.4 cm) wide and the base is about 3â
 inches in diameter (â9.8 cm). The lantern is lightweight and easy to display on a shelf, mantel or in a curio cabinet.
