đ If your kitchen style leans towards earthy, handmade charm, this little jam pot might be your new favourite accent.
Itâs a handâthrown stoneware jar with a matching lid, built for spooning out homemade jam, honey or sugar but just as happy holding tea bags or trinkets.
The rounded body has a creamy base glaze and is decorated with swirling bands of mossâgreen slip that wrap around like tiny waves.
A darker brown glaze on the shoulder flows up to a flared rim and domed knob on the lid.
The front features a raised plaque with âJAMâ impressed into the clay and filled with dark slip for contrast.
Underneath, the potter signed the piece âHuyâ, so it was made by an individual rather than massâproduced.
đ Ceramics have been used for preserves since at least the 19th century. Frank Cooperâs Oxford marmalade, for example, was sold in glazed stoneware pots around 1900. In the 1970s the studio pottery movement embraced rustic kitchenware, and small workshops in the UK, Canada and the USA produced lidded condiment jars decorated with marbled glazes and stamped labels. Tremar and Presingoll potteries in Cornwall made similar pieces in the 1970s, and North American potters soon followed suit.
This jar, with its earthy colour palette and marbled decoration, fits right into that tradition. It was thrown on a wheel, decorated with slip, and highâfired to make it durable and foodâsafe. The lid has a notch so you can leave a spoon in place when serving, and the interior is glazed dark brown for easy cleaning.
đ Dimensions â The pot stands about 4Ÿ inches tall with the lid on (â10.8 cm) and measures roughly 4ž inches in diameter (â12.1 cm). It weighs around 706 g (â1.56 lb) so it feels solid in the hand.
The opening is generous enough to fit a jam spoon and will hold enough preserve for breakfast or afternoon tea.
âď¸ Condition â In very good vintage shape with no cracks, chips or crazing on the body. There is a small restored chip on the underside of the lid (visible in the photos); itâs either a glaze flaw from the making process or a minor repair. The rest of the jar shows only light wear from gentle use and displays beautifully.
