Shaped like a chefās hat perched on a moustached face, this stoneware pot is handāpainted in warm brown glaze on top with a natural clay base.
The sculpted rim mimics a puffed toque while the lower section features a handādrawn nose, button eyes, and a distinctive moustache.
Itās just the right size for keeping wooden spoons, spatulas or whisks within reach, and it doubles as a quirky planter or countertop conversation piece.
š Takahashi history ā The Takahashi Trading Company was founded in 1946 by JapaneseāAmerican couple Henri and Tomoye āTamiāĀ Takahashi after their release from the Topaz War Relocation Center. Starting with a small shop in SanĀ Franciscoās Japantown, they imported handcrafted items such as folk art, tea ceremony accessories and musical instruments. The business grew into a nationwide homeāgoods retailer and wholesaler, with stores in SanĀ Francisco, Sausalito and NewĀ York, and operated until 2019. Their headquarters in a 1912 timberāframe warehouse at 200Ā Rhode Island Street is now a SanĀ Francisco Designated Landmark because of the coupleās contributions to JapaneseāAmerican culture and commerce. Pieces from the LeĀ Chef line ā like this utensil holder ā exemplify their playful take on functional ceramics.
š The holder stands about 6Ā inches (ā15.2Ā cm) tall and measures roughly 4Ā½Ā inches (ā11.4Ā cm) in diameter. It weighs around 781Ā g (ā1.72Ā lb). Its generous interior will accommodate a handful of utensils or a small plant, and the stable base prevents tipping.
āļø This vintage piece is in very good condition with no cracks or crazing. There are tiny pinholes on the rim where it sat on kiln stilts during firing; these are typical manufacturing marks and add character. A small brown brush mark on one ear could be called a birthmark (see photos). Otherwise, only light wear from age is present, so it displays beautifully and remains completely functional.
