đ If you love pieces that sparkle with history, this gorgeous marigold bon bon dish will make your heart skip a beat.
Crafted by Fenton in the early 1910s, the bowl is made of pressed glass with a rich iridescent sheen.
The Lotus & Grape pattern features a large lotus blossom surrounded by clusters of grapes and scrolling leaves. Four gently curved sides rise to a scalloped rim, and graceful handles arc from opposite corners so you can serve sweets or simply admire the way light dances across the surface.
Each handle is pulled from the molten glass, leaving a neat shear mark at the underside â a sign of handâfinishing rather than a flaw. The outside of the bowl displays faint fold marks where the hot glass was crimped and shaped; these are manufacturing marks typical of early pressed glass, not chips or cracks.
đ What is carnival glass? â Carnival glass is an iridescent pressed glass that was produced mainly between about 1907 and the midâ1920s. Artisans achieved the shimmering rainbow finish by spraying metallic salts onto hot glass, then reâfiring it to fuse the colours. More than a thousand patterns were created in this brief yet prolific era. Companies like Fenton and Northwood competed to make affordable yet glamorous tableware that was often given away at fairs and carnivals, hence the name. Fentonâs Lotus & Grape design dates from around 1911 and was made in various shapes; the twoâhandled bon bon (or nappy) is prized for its delicate form and intricate embossing. Marigold examples with good colour and crisp moulding remain sought after by collectors.
đ About Fenton â The Fenton brothers founded the Fenton Art Glass Company in Williamstown, West Virginia, in 1905. They were among the first American glassworks to produce carnival glass, and their innovative designs and vibrant colours quickly made them leaders in the field. Fenton continued producing art glass into the twentyâfirst century, and vintage pieces from the companyâs early years are now beloved antiques.
đ Measurements â The bon bon stands about 3 inches tall (7.6 cm) and measures roughly 7½ inches wide including the handles (19 cm). The body itself is about 6 inches wide (15.2 cm). It weighs around 411 g (0.9 lb). The handles arch above the rim, making it easy to carry or display the dish.
âď¸ Condition â This centuryâold dish is in excellent vintage condition. The iridescence is strong, the moulding is crisp and there are no chips, cracks or repairs. There are normal tool marks from the manufacturing process: a faint fold line on the outside where the hot glass was gathered and a tiny shear mark on one handle where the excess was cut away. These are part of the charm of early pressed glass and do not detract from its beauty.
Whether you fill it with candy, jewellery or potpourri, this Fenton Lotus & Grape bon bon will add a little magic to your space.
Itâs a wonderful gift for a carnivalâglass collector or anyone who appreciates the romance of antique glassware.
