đŚ Transport yourself to sunâdrenched Rhodes with this charming handâpainted wall plate from Dakas Keramik.
The piece is made from locally sourced terracotta clay â Rhodes is famed for its highâquality clay and long pottery tradition â and it bears the workshopâs signature â100 % Hand Made Dakas Keramik Archagelos Rodosâ carved on the back. The inscription uses the local spelling âArchagelos Rodosâ rather than the anglicised âArchangelos, Rhodes.â Archangelos is one of the islandâs historic pottery centres, and Dakas has been producing plates, vases and tiles there since the midâ20th century. Each piece is handâshaped, fired and then decorated with coloured glazes, making every example unique.
đ Pottery has been an important art form in Greece since ancient times; the Aegean islands gave rise to a variety of ceramic styles because of their strategic position and access to trade. Rhodes, in particular, became known for the quality and diversity of its ceramics. Potters had access to abundant, excellent clays and produced objects that balanced practical use with decorative beauty. Over the centuries, Rhodian workshops absorbed influences from Phoenicia, Egypt and Cyprus. Modern workshops, including those in Lindos, Salakos, Afantou, Archangelos and Embonas, continue these traditions. Dakas Keramik is part of this living heritage, creating plates featuring local flora, fauna and mythological motifs.
The Dakas family established their workshop in Archangelos in the 1960s. They specialise in terracotta pieces glazed with earthy colors and raised designs.
The central motif on this plate depicts a white stag grazing, surrounded by tiny crescents and berries.
đ¤ Deer were sacred to Artemis, goddess of the hunt, and continue to symbolise grace and fertility in Greek folk art.
Rhodes itself is home to the native fallow deer (dama dama), which has become an emblem of the island; even the medieval city gates are topped with deer statues.
Around the rim, radiating âpetalsâ of deep green glaze are dotted with zigâzag and circle motifs; some historians interpret these as lightning and raindrops, symbols of renewal and abundance.
Tiny raised beads of ochre glaze run between the panels like strings of olives or pomegranates, reinforcing the fertility theme.
This plate was made in the 1990s and retains its original handwritten mark on the back.
Two small holes at the footring allow you to thread a cord or wire for hanging.
đ Dimensions â The plate measures about 7Ÿ inches (18.4 cm) in diameter and stands around ž inch high (1.9 cm).
âď¸ Excellent vintage condition with no chips, cracks or crazing. The glaze colours are vibrant and the terracotta shows only light signs of age. There are no repairs. Please examine the photos for details.
