đš If you love the romance of oldâworld craftsmanship, this petite lacquer box is a jewel.
Made in China around the midâ20th century, itâs crafted from wood and finished with multiple layers of lustrous lacquer.
The deep brown surface is marbled with a yellow golden undertone, creating a subtle pattern of roses and leaves that appears to float beneath the lacquerâan effect achieved by applying contrasting colour layers and then polishing them smooth.
đ Lacquerware tradition â Chinese artisans have used lacquer derived from the sap of the Rhus vernicifera tree to protect and decorate objects for millennia. Lacquerware was prized for its colourful designs and durability, and it adorned everything from bowls and screens to coffins. Each layer of lacquer must dry and be polished before the next is applied, a process that can require dozens of coats. This timeâhonoured technique gives the box its glassy finish and protects the artwork beneath.
Open the brass latch to reveal a vivid red silkâbrocade lining.
The padded base and lid protect your jewellery or treasures.
Brass hinges at the back hold the lid securely, and the box sits on discreet wooden feet that raise it slightly off the table.
đ Size â The box measures about 5â
 inches wide (13 cm), 2 inches tall (5 cm) and 2â
 inches deep (7.3 cm). Lightweight.
âď¸ Condition â Good vintage condition with some signs of age. There are small chips in the lacquer at the corners, exposing the yellow base layer, and minor wear on the box. The silk lining padding on the inside of the lid has a slight bend, but is still safely glued. The brass hinges and latch work smoothly. Please review the photos for details.
