This detailed miniature ship was handmade in Mauritius and proudly carries the rainbow-colored national flag (red, blue, yellow, and green), introduced when the island gained independence in 1968.
This piece isn’t a replica of one specific ship, but rather a classic tourist collectible sailing vessel—this kind of handmade model often called a barque or brigantine, crafted with wood, cloth sails, string rigging, and painted details. Each one of these was built by Mauritian artisans, sold in small shops around Port Louis and seaside hotels, especially popular from the 1970s through the 1990s.
📜 Mauritius, a small island nation in the Indian Ocean, became famous for these decorative ship models. They were made to honor the island’s long seafaring and trading heritage—ships were central to its history, from Dutch and French colonization to independence. Tourists cherished them as symbols of their travels, often taking them home as reminders of palm-lined beaches, vibrant markets, and Indian Ocean adventures.
This particular model, with its “Souvenir Mauritius” plaque, tells you it was created for the travel trade. That doesn’t make it any less special—it makes it part of a long story of island craftsmanship and cultural pride. And unlike modern mass-produced versions, this one shows signs of hand-finishing: slightly uneven paintwork, natural cord rigging, and sails cut by hand. That’s what gives it its soul. 🤍

✔️ It’s in good vintage condition overall. The wooden hull is solid, sails are intact but naturally show age with a few loose threads and a bit of fabric edge wear (totally normal for handmade pieces of this age). The base has been re-glued at some point after an incident, leaving one section slightly uneven and missing a tiny piece—but it is very solid and supports the ship perfectly. The imperfections add to its vintage character and authenticity. Please see photos for details.
