The original oil painting A Young Girl Reading by Jean-HonorĂ© Fragonard, measuring approximately 81.1 Ă 64.8 cm (32 Ă 25 Âœ in), is housed in the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
It entered the collection in 1961 as a gift from Ailsa Mellon Bruce, who donated it in memory of her father, Andrew W. Mellon. Mellon, a financier, philanthropist, and U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, was one of the key figures behind the creation of the National Gallery itself.
His immense personal collection of European masterpieces laid the foundation for the museum when it opened in 1941, and his family continued this legacy with further donations. Ailsa Mellon Bruce, in particular, became one of the most important benefactors, ensuring that treasures such as Fragonardâs A Young Girl Reading would be accessible to the public.
Today, the painting not only represents Fragonardâs mastery of Rococo portraiture, but also symbolizes the Mellon familyâs vision of bringing great art to America and preserving it for future generations.
