📜 What is Tonalá pottery?
Tonalá, just outside Guadalajara, has been producing some of Mexico’s finest ceramics for centuries. This piece belongs to the barro bruñido (burnished clay) tradition, where mineral-based paints are applied to the surface and then hand-polished with a smooth stone, leaving a soft satiny finish. Unlike glossy modern glazes, bruñido has a warm, organic feel that highlights the earthy tones of the clay.
📜 About the Artist — Mateos Family
Signed “Mateos Mexico,” this vase comes from the well-known Mateos artisan family of Tonalá, active across multiple generations throughout the 20th century. Members of the Mateos family are respected for both barro bruñido and barro negro esgrafiado, with their works often featuring birds, foliage, and cobalt blue accents. Pieces simply signed Mateos were often created for the export market from the mid-20th century to the 1990s, making them treasured finds for collectors today.
