🦪 A little moon of ocean color
This round paua (New Zealand abalone) shell flashes electric teal, violet and inky blue, framed by a dotted halo of dark, sparkly stones in oxidized sterling silver.
The bail is decorative, too—patterned and pavé-set to match the border—so the whole piece reads like a tiny, jeweled portal to the sea.

✔️ Very good vintage condition with light, honest wear. Note: two tiny pavé stones are missing on the bail only; thanks to the oxidized silver, they’re not obvious at normal viewing distance. A few of the stones were not set centered, but they are well glued. The shell is glossy, with natural growth patterns and a beautiful rough finish.
📜 What is paua—and why does it glow like that?
“Pāua” is the Māori name for Haliotis iris, the New Zealand abalone. It’s famous for being the most vividly colored of NZ shells, with shimmering blues, greens and mauves on the inside and a rough, dull exterior in the wild. That rainbow look comes from ultra-thin layers of nacre that interfere with light—so the colors shift as you move.
📜 About the glittery halo
So-called “marcasite” jewelry is traditionally set with pyrite (iron disulfide) cut into tiny rose-like facets; true mineral marcasite is unstable in jewelry. Those smoky, metallic sparkles became a favorite accent in silver pieces from the Victorian era through Art Deco and saw big revivals in late-20th-century fashion, right where this pendant’s style fits.

Care
Wipe the shell with a soft dry cloth; avoid ultrasonic cleaners and harsh chemicals. If you polish the silver, use a targeted cloth and try not to rub the pavé stones.
