Step back into the Art Deco era with this octagonal black plate by Grimwades (Royal Winton).
đ¤ Produced circa 1930s, the piece features a matte black glaze with colourful classical figuresâmusicians, dancers and winged messengersâraised slightly above the surface.
The centre rim sports a Greek key motif, while four torch-like motifs anchor the cardinal points. The hand-painted enamel scenes are bright and crisp; they were likely applied over the glaze using a combination of transfer-printing and hand-finishingâa technique made possible thanks to Grimwadeâs early adoption of lithographic transfer technology (Leonard Grimwade helped invent âDuplexâ transfer paper to improve the process).
đ About Grimwades & Royal Winton â Grimwades Ltd., founded at Hanley in 1900, became one of North Staffordshireâs largest earthenware manufacturers by the early 1920s. Their trade name âRoyal Wintonâ appeared around 1929 and soon became synonymous with vibrant chintz ware and stylish Art Deco patterns. The companyâs success lay in its innovative decorations: by the 1920sâ30s they were producing artâdeco tableware with stylised geometries and bright glazes. Later patterns such as âHazelâ featured mottled black backgrounds with bouquets of flowers, showing that dark glazes were fashionable and technically feasible at the time. Other potteries in Staffordshire advertised black and jet wares for home and colonial markets.
đ Measures approximately 9âŻinches diameter à žâŻinches tall (~23âŻcm diameter Ă 1.9âŻcm high). The octagonal shape gives it presence and the wide rim invites display.
âď¸ Very good vintage condition. The matte black glaze shows light use marks; there is typical crazing on the underside, but no chips or cracks. The handâpainted designs remain bright and beautifully intact.
đ A bit of context â Grimwadesâ innovations extended beyond aesthetics. Founder Leonard Grimwade experimented with continuous kilns and, in partnership with the paper firm Brittainâs, devised Duplex transfer tissue that made lithographic decoration commercially viable. Their success allowed them to employ over 1,500 workers and produce hundreds of patterns. Collectors prize Royal Winton pieces for this blend of artistry and industrial ingenuity.
