📜 About the art and technique: Murano glass birds are traditionally made on the island of Murano, using techniques passed down through generations. Each bird is formed by master glass artisans, one at a time, resulting in a unique piece of glass art. This example uses Murano Style technique, the filigrana (filigree) technique, in which thin glass canes of colorless, white or sometimes colored glass are fused into a blown form to create linear patterns. Glass canes (vetro a fili) are first drawn from molten glass and contain threads of colored glass along their length; artisans arrange these canes on a marver and roll a clear glass core over them, then blow and shape the form, stretching the stripes into waves. Variations of filigrana include reticello, which interlaces two sets of canes in opposite directions to form a net‑like pattern with tiny air bubbles, and zanfirico (retortoli), where the canes are twisted in opposite directions to create spirals. The filigrana style originated on Murano in the 16th century and spread through Europe before being revived in the 19th century.
