Crafted in fine porcelain, the plate shows a wide‑eyed child in cosy pyjamas propped against a pillow, reading from a book titled “Story Time” to an adoring audience of toys — a teddy bear in a mauve bow tie, a blue rabbit, a penguin in a cape, a tabby cat, and a tiny doll in a blue dress. They sit on a patchwork quilt amid shelves of toys and books, while ivy winds around the window frame (beware the little mouse!) and a lamp casts a warm glow. The colours are soft but rich: sage greens, powder blues, warm browns, and pops of crimson. A smooth gold rim encircles the scene, adding a touch of elegance to the whimsical design. The plate itself is an inspiration for many stories!
📜 The plate comes from Franklin Porcelain, a division of the Franklin Mint. The Franklin Mint was founded in 1964 by Joseph Segel in Wawa, Pennsylvania, USA. It quickly became famous for producing coins, medals, jewellery, die‑cast vehicles, dolls, and collectible plates. In the 1970s–80s, the Mint expanded beyond coins into decorative items; its plates often featured licensed art and beloved characters, marketed through magazines and television.
This plate is stamped on the back as “The 1981 Carol Lawson Plate – Storytime – Limited Edition / Fine Porcelain – ©1981 Franklin Porcelain – Second Firing”.
📜Carol Lawson is a British illustrator born in Giggleswick, England. After studying Art and Design at the College of Art and Brighton University, she worked as a freelance advertising illustrator. In the 1980s she commissioned the Franklin Mint to create porcelain plates and figurines illustrating fairy tales, and has since illustrated more than fifty classic stories. Her work spans international book publishing, design, and advertising, and often depicts unicorns, fairies, teddy bears, animals, birds, and Christmas scenes. Lawson writes and illustrates her own books and continues to produce her own print publications. This “Storytime” series captures her love of storytelling and childhood wonder.

This plate is meant for display only (not food‑safe). It has no hanger but fits perfectly on a plate stand or in a wall rack. The back is signed by Carol Lawson and bears the Franklin Porcelain mark.
