đŚ This framed Len Gibbs print captures a quiet moment of childhood curiosity.
It is a vintage reproduction of Gibbsâs painting âModel Builderâ, part of the Contemporary Canadian Art Card Series.
đŠď¸ The scene shows a young boy sitting on a weatherâworn wooden step, carefully whittling and assembling parts for a model airplane. A box of supplies rests beside him and a small coping saw lies at his feet, hinting at the patient craftsmanship involved.
The boyâs concentrated expression and the rough textures of the cabin walls and porch are rendered in the superârealist style that made Gibbs famous. Earthy shades of beige, brown and grey dominate the background while the boyâs red Tâshirt, blue jacket and jeans provide gentle colour contrast. You can almost smell the sawdust and hear the quiet of a summer afternoon.
đ The framed print is approx. 12½ Ă 10½ inches (about 31.8 Ă 26.7 cm) overall and weighs roughly 733 grams.
-- Itâs not too big and not too small â ideal for a study, hallway or childâs room.
-- The oak frame has a warm, midâcentury finish and is glazed with glass to protect the artwork.
-- On the back youâll find a wire hanger attached with screws for easy display.
âď¸ It is in very good vintage condition. A small spot of discolouration on the wood and a few light marks from age are the only signs of wear. The print itself is clean and bright; colours remain vivid. Please see the photos for closeâups.
đ Len Gibbs (1929â2010) was a selfâtaught Canadian painter celebrated for his superârealism. Born in Cranbrook, British Columbia, he later lived in Brandon, Calgary, Edmonton and Victoria. Gibbs earned his pilotâs licence at just 16 and joined the Royal Navy submarine HMS Tallyho after graduating from high school. After working as a creative director in advertising, he left the business world in 1968 to paint fullâtime.
His first solo exhibition in Vancouver sold out on the first day, and he would later have sellâout shows across Canada, the United States and England.
Gibbs mastered acrylics, watercolours and dryâbrush techniques and was known for depicting children, ranchers and West Coast life with meticulous detail.
He built and flew his own airplane, restored classic cars and even sailed model boats in Victoria â hobbies that inspired works like Model Builder.
Gibbs remained a beloved figure in Western Canadian art until his death in 2010 and was honoured as an Honorary Citizen of Victoria.
đ¤ About this print â The reproduction offered here is part of the Contemporary Canadian Art Card Series, a set of highâquality prints licensed from Len Gibbsâs limitedâedition giclĂŠe collection. It is mounted on a backing card that includes a short biography of Gibbs, noting that he travelled the prairies and West Coast seeking scenes for his acrylic and dryâbrush paintings and that his works are widely collected in Canada, the U.S., England and Denmark. While this cardâseries print is not numbered, it faithfully reproduces the original painting, preserving the mood and texture of Gibbsâs brushwork.
đĄ This artwork fits beautifully in a rustic cabin, farmhouse kitchen or childâs bedroom.
đĄ Hang it in a reading nook alongside other vintage prints, lean it on a mantel for a touch of Canadiana.
đĄ Or give it to someone who loves building models.
Gibbsâs highârealism style and the nostalgic subject matter make this print a conversation piece and a tribute to simple joys.
