This antique discus hails from the early days of modern track & field, when equipment was lovingly crafted from natural materials instead of plastic.
Made of laminated hardwood with a sturdy iron rim and a brass centre weight, it’s the same style used by throwers from the 1920s through the 1950s.
Originally designed to be hurled in the discus throw — an event with roots in ancient Greece — this vintage disc now makes a striking decorative piece.
The wood has mellowed to a rich, dark patina and the metal rim shows decades of honest wear.
Unlike later models with a removable screw to adjust weight, this earlier design features a fixed brass plug; the faint “l” stamped on the plug probably denotes its weight class.
📜 The discus throw is one of the oldest athletic contests and part of the Olympic program since 1896. In modern events the implement is a wooden disc with a metal rim; the men’s discus is about 220 mm (8.66 in) in diameter and has small brass plates set flush into its sides. Antique wooden versions like this one were used until synthetic materials took over in the second half of the 20th century.

✔️ Condition: Very good vintage condition, with beautiful patina throughout. The iron rim shows surface wear and a few small rust spots, and there are slight gaps between the wooden laminations, but the structure is sound. The brass centre plug is worn but intact.
