đ¤ A little Vegas romance you can actually hear.
This wind-up musical porcelain bell features a sumptuous Rococo lovers scene after François Boucher, the quintessential âflirtatious shepherds in a parkâ motif that made Europe swoon in the mid-1700s.
Deep chocolate brown glaze, scrolling gilt, and a pastoral transfer that looks straight out of an 18th-century salon⌠and yes, it plays when you lift it.
đ Size: about 5½ in tall Ă 3â
in wide (approx 14 cm Ă 8 cm).
The image cartouche on the log reads âF Boucher 1859â. That inscription is a later decoratorâs caption, not a hand signature by the artist and not the date of the original painting. François Boucher (1703â1770) painted many variations of courting couples a century earlier (c. 1749â1758). When 20th-century factories reproduced his imagery on porcelain, they often added a printed credit line with an anachronistic date, in other words, its a decoratorâs credit line often added to Boucher-inspired transfers.
âď¸Excellent vintage condition: no chips or cracks, just light shelf/handling marks from gentle use. The bottom lift-switch âstopâ works nicely: music plays when the bell is lifted from the surface and stops when set down.
The tune is a slow, pretty waltz; I havenât figure out which song it is yet, but you can hear it on my Instagram @vintagebyfatima (and maybe help me discover whitch song is that) :)
đ Boucher (1703â1770) was the rock star of French Rococo. He painted many variations of courting couples in idyllic landscapes -see museum examples like âPastoral with a Couple near a Fountainâ (1749, Wallace Collection) and âLovers in a Parkâ (1758, Timken Museum). His imagery was adapted to porcelain in his lifetime by Vincennes/Sèvres and then endlessly reused on European and later Japanese export wares via transfers with gilt handmade golden highlights exaclty like this bell I'm selling.
đ¤ The gold oval label reads âTunes & Time â Imperial Palace Hotel â Las Vegas, Nevada.â That points to an in-house gift shop at the Imperial Palace (1979â2012; now The LINQ) It's a classic Strip souvenir merch from the 1980sâ1990s.
đ¤ The wind-up movement was made by Sankyo, Japan (now NIDEC Instruments), the company that supplied the majority of the worldâs music-box mechanisms in the late 20th century. Many identical bells carry âLeGo Japanâ paper labels, a decorator/export exporter active in the same period.
đĄ Use & display ideas: Let it charm a bookshelf, vanity, or entry table;
đĄ group with other brown-and-gold ceramics for a vintage vignette;
đĄ or give it to the music-box lover who has everything.
It reads old-world romantic but keeps that 80sâ90s Vegas souvenir story: best of both worlds.
About the melody: The bell plays a gentle waltz. If youâre curious, I posted a short video on Instagram @vintagebyfatima so you can listen and help me identify the exact song đ.
