📜 Traditional Anatolian folk art with music in its DNA
Hand carved and hand painted in northwestern Anatolia—attributed to the İvrindi Balıkesir area. This wooden kaşık spoon bridges craft and music. In Turkish folk traditions, pairs of spoons are played like castanets in lively kaşık havaları dances: two spoons held in one hand, clicked back to back to keep rhythm.
This spoon shows the classic bright orange red varnish and tulip style floral painting. Those were found across village workshops from the mid to late 20th century (often 1960s–1990s), each piece unique and made to be both playable percussion and decorative art.
📜 Inside the bowl you’ll see a stylized tulip and foliate design—lale in Turkish—an enduring Ottoman era emblem tied to spring, elegance, and good taste. This simplified tulip with black linework and small leaf dots is a workshop hallmark you’ll spot on many Anatolian souvenir and musical spoons; painters repeated the pattern freehand, so no two are identical.
📐 Approx. 8 ½ × 1 ⅛ × 2 in (about 21.6 × 2.9 × 5.1 cm).
Very light boxwood or similar fine grained soft hardwood—easy to play, easy to hang.
✔️ Very good vintage condition. No splits or cracks in the wood. Hand painting remains vivid; some fade on the back of the handle from age and use. Signed or stamped by artist or region on reverse. Clean and ready to display or to pair with a second spoon for rhythm practice.
