đ Sgraffito is a pottery technique where a colored slip is applied, then parts are carefully scratched away to reveal the contrasting clay below. The result is crisp, incised lines you can feel with your fingertips and a striking two-tone designâexactly what you see here with the zigzags and the linked-figure frieze.
Workshops in Brazil have long produced carved and slip-decorated terracotta for the home-decor market. Two areas especially known for distinctive folk ceramics are Minas GeraisâVale do Jequitinhonha (renowned for its clay art tradition and export of decorative wares) and Alto do Moura in Caruaru, Pernambuco (famous for its pottery district). While your planter bears only the generic âHandmade in Brazilâ stamp, its commercial folk style and sgraffito decoration are consistent with Brazilian gift-trade production from the 1980s era.
