⌛ This little wooden box looks like it walked straight out of an archaeology book and onto your shelf.
A bold stick-like human figure is carved on the domed lid, arms and legs splayed in a dancing pose.
The carved lines and black-and-white wash finish give it the feeling of an ancient petroglyph… but in a cozy, palm-sized trinket box.
🖤 The box is turned from wood and then carved and painted by hand. Outside, it has a soft white-washed look with darker charcoal brushing that settles into the carving and grain. Inside, the compartment is painted a deep matte black, so anything you tuck inside stands out beautifully.

• internal compartment height: about 1 ⅝ in (4.1 cm)
📜 The figure on the lid immediately calls to mind ancient Southwestern pottery, especially the Mimbres black-on-white bowls and Four-Mile polychrome pieces where human figures are shown with angular arms and legs in a splayed pose, painted in black on a light ground. Those bowls were made around 1000–1150 AD in what is now New Mexico and Arizona, and contemporary artists still draw inspiration from their bold, graphic designs today.
This wooden box isn’t an ancient artifact or Native American pottery—it’s a modern vintage piece, probably from the late 20th century, carved in wood instead of clay. But the artist clearly borrowed that same language of zigzag limbs, simple faces, and central symbols, translating it into a rustic wooden form that feels both old and modern at the same time.
It’s perfect for anyone who loves archaeology, desert landscapes, tribal-style art, or bold graphic figures.
✔️ This box is in very good vintage condition. The carving is crisp, the lid fits well, and the paint is nicely worn in the best way—just enough rubbing and tiny marks to give it character. You’ll see a few small points of discoloration and light wear on the rim and base from previous use, but no cracks, repairs, or major damage.
