Vintage Portable Radio 2004 Vextra AM/FM | TV Sound Weather Band | Working Y2K Electronics

📻 There is something wonderfully nostalgic about an old-fashioned portable radio: turning the tuning wheel, moving the antenna around, and suddenly hearing your favourite station coming through the speaker!

This vintage Vextra radio, manufactured in September 2004, brings back that familiar experience, and it's still working!

With its metallic silver-grey body, large charcoal-grey speaker grille, shiny chrome-look details and old-fashioned analog tuning display, it has all the charm of early-2000s electronics.

This portable radio features traditional AM and FM reception, two additional bands originally intended for television sound, and a weather-band setting. The tuning display is particularly interesting, with its colourful orange and blue channel markings, frequency scales and little weather symbol.

It also has manual tuning and volume controls, a telescopic metal antenna, a built-in speaker and a folding carrying handle, making it easy to move from room to room.

It can be powered using the included AC power cord or three 1.5V C-size batteries.

This is a lovely little piece of technology to rediscover.

📜 A little history
It's an interesting example of the portable multi-band radios popular during the early 2000s, when manufacturers often combined ordinary AM/FM listening with additional broadcast features.

Besides the familiar AM and FM bands, this radio includes TV1 and TV2 tuning scales covering the old analog television channels 2 through 13.

These were designed to receive the audio portion of analog television broadcasts — something that may bring back memories for anyone who remembers listening to television sound on a portable radio!

Of course, television technology has changed considerably since then, and these older TV sound bands are generally no longer useful for receiving modern digital television broadcasts.

The radio also includes a weather-band setting marked 162.55 MHz, originally intended for listening to compatible weather broadcasts.

⚙️ A note about radio and weather-band reception:
Radio reception varies considerably depending on geographical location, proximity to broadcasting stations, local terrain, buildings, interference and antenna positioning. A station received clearly in one location may be weak or unavailable somewhere else.

Weather-band reception is also dependent on whether compatible broadcasts are available nearby. Canada's Weatheradio service was discontinued in March 2026, while certain areas of the United States continue to have NOAA weather transmissions.

Consequently, the weather-band feature may not receive any broadcasts in your area, and reception of particular AM/FM stations cannot be guaranteed everywhere.

✔️ Condition

This radio is in good working vintage condition, with visible cosmetic imperfections from age and previous use.

There are various scratches, scuffs and small marks on the silver-grey casing, particularly around the edges, controls and back.
One of the most noticeable marks is a scratch or line that runs through the area of the Vextra logo and continues toward the tuning window.
There are also smaller scratches on the shiny dial surround, a small visible blemish on the dark speaker fabric and a raised or scraped area on the side of the casing.

The original labels are still present, including one indicating that the radio was refurbished at some point. I do not know when the refurbishment was performed or what work was carried out.

The battery compartment cover, folding handle, telescopic antenna and AC power cord are all present, as shown in the photographs.

Please take a careful look at all the photographs, especially the close-ups showing the cosmetic imperfections, so you can see exactly what to expect.

This is a genuine vintage radio from 2004, with all the character of a piece that has already lived a little!
