Vintage 1988 NWT Hair Tufting Wall Hanging | Indigenous Floral Folk Art

$163.28

☀️ A beautiful piece of Northern Canadian textile artistry!

This vintage wall hanging, dated 1988, features traditional moose or caribou hair tufting, a remarkable decorative technique with deep roots in the Indigenous artistic traditions of Canada's Northwest Territories.

The piece features a delicate arrangement of three-dimensional flowers in soft coral and terracotta, with a bright yellow centre and muted olive-grey leaves. The tiny sculpted tufts create an extraordinary textured effect, almost like miniature flowers blooming from the surface.

The cream-coloured, hide-like central panel has an unusual sunburst shape, with small openings around its edges. Fine natural-coloured cords extend from these openings to a circular metal hoop wrapped in a pale cream strip. Together, they create a beautiful openwork design that is both rustic and delicate.

A reddish signature or monogram appears beneath the flowers, while the reverse is handwritten with "N.W.T. 1988", suggesting a Northwest Territories origin and dating the piece to 1988. The artist has not been positively identified.

📜 history
Moose and caribou hair tufting is a remarkable artistic tradition that developed in the Northwest Territories in the early 20th century, particularly among Métis women in the Fort Providence area. The technique was subsequently passed on through generations of Dene, Métis and other Northern Indigenous artists.

Creating tufted artwork involves preparing and dyeing animal hair, securing small bundles to hide or fabric with thread, and carefully trimming the upright hairs into three-dimensional flowers and leaves. Every detail requires patience, precision and skilled craftsmanship.

Traditionally used to decorate moccasins, mittens and clothing, this art form later became popular for decorative pictures and wall hangings.

🤍 This particular piece is a lovely and very RARE example of the tradition, with an open circular design and a handwritten 1988 date.

The exact animal-hair species, artist and community of origin have not been independently verified.

NWT Arts connects traditional hide preparation and hair tufting with knowledge of the land, resourcefulness, cultural continuity and the preservation of skills passed between generations.

The flowers are also significant. Floral patterns became an important part of Northern Indigenous decorative arts, and hair tufting developed into a distinctive art form among Métis women in the Northwest Territories during the early 20th century.

✔️ condition
Good vintage condition, with age-related marks, natural discoloration, small stains, surface blemishes and wear to the wrapped hoop. Some areas of the wrapping show darker marks and slight separation or unevenness. Minor loose fibres and debris are visible around the tufted decoration. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form part of the condition description. The cords are firm, and the structure is sound.

A lovely addition to a collection of Northern Canadian craftsmanship, traditional textile art or vintage folk art.

It also makes a distinctive decorative accent for a gallery wall, rustic interior or thoughtfully curated home.
