This beautiful tray brings together two names in vintage decorative design: **Otagiri of Japan and Gibson Greeting Cards, Inc. of Cincinnati, Ohio, USA.**
Gibson's story began in 1855 as a lithographic printing company, long before it became one of America's largest greeting-card manufacturers. Known for its illustrated cards, stationery, and decorative paper goods, Gibson helped popularize the familiar folded greeting card and became the third-largest greeting-card company in the United States during the 1960s.
What makes this tray particularly interesting is the connection between Gibson's American illustration heritage and Japanese lacquerware. Its colourful mallard duck artwork is credited to Gibson Greeting Cards, Inc., while the tray itself bears the OTAGIRI JAPAN mark.
It's a lovely reminder of a time when decorative illustrations weren't limited to paper products but could also bring character to everyday household objects.
American Greetings eventually acquired Gibson in 1999, making pieces carrying its original company credit an interesting part of the brand's design history.
The tray also retains its original Otagiri cleaning-instructions label, recommending a soft, damp cloth to preserve its lustre and beauty.

Good vintage condition, with visible signs of previous use and age. There are numerous light surface scratches and scuffs on the glossy green finish, including the underside. The gold-coloured rim shows noticeable wear, with small areas where the finish has rubbed away. There are also a few small blemishes and marks on the surface.
Despite these imperfections, the tray retains its beautiful dark green colour, glossy appearance, and attractive duck illustration.
