Combining traditional geometric marquetry, colourful miniature painting and practical stationery storage, this decorative piece is as lovely to admire as it is useful.
⭐ The rectangular wooden base is covered with intricate geometric patterns, including tiny repeating stars, triangles and ornamental borders in warm wood tones, gold, black, cream and red.
Its glossy lacquered finish enhances the beautiful details and gives the entire piece a rich, polished appearance.
At the centre is a charming Persian miniature-style painting depicting three riders on galloping horses, dressed in colourful traditional clothing and holding long polo mallets.
The scene represents Chowgan, the traditional Persian game of polo, with a small ball visible between the horses. The figures are surrounded by a peaceful landscape of mountains and slender trees, while bright blue floral corners create a lovely contrast with the warm yellow background.
The organizer also features two brass pen holders that can be rotated to adjust their position, along with a matching double-panel holder for business cards, letters or small notes. All three elements complement the beautifully decorated wooden base, creating an elegant and functional desk accessory.
📜 history
Khatam Kari is a traditional Persian marquetry art with a long history. The technique involves combining very small pieces of contrasting materials into precise geometric patterns, which are then used to decorate wooden surfaces.
The work requires considerable patience and skill. Even a small decorative section can involve numerous tiny elements carefully arranged into repeating stars and symmetrical designs. Traditionally, Khatam Kari has been used to embellish jewellery boxes, picture frames, writing accessories, furniture and other decorative objects.
The central painting offers another connection to Persian cultural history. Chowgan, an early form of polo, has been played in Persia for centuries and was once associated with royal courts and skilled horsemanship. Scenes of mounted players and their horses also became popular subjects in Persian miniature painting.
This lovely organizer brings together these two artistic traditions: the precision of geometric marquetry and the storytelling of figurative miniature painting.

Very good vintage condition, with light signs of previous use and age.
The wooden base and decorative surfaces show some minor marks and wear consistent with a vintage piece. The brass pen holders have developed a lovely natural patina, with some darker areas and surface discolouration.
Both brass holders can be rotated to adjust their position. Please note that the left pen holder is a little loose at its fitting, although it remains usable.
The lacquered surface retains its beautiful shine, and the intricate decoration presents very nicely overall. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description.
Colours may look slightly different depending on your screen and lighting conditions. Some photographs show natural light reflections on the glossy finish to help illustrate the surface texture and raised details.
